The best business to start is one that you are potentially good at. There are many businesses that you can start – different business models. Lets examine some and decide which are the best ones for the average person with limited funds. Let’s see if we can find the best business to start. While others are looking for the best business to buy, you will be starting one that will take you through the toughest times ahead.
I have a lot of information in this article, so try to stick with it. I’ve been studying this stuff for a long time and have lots of experience with many of the concepts here so I know a bit more than a little about it.
Read on for a basic list of offline and online business models for a fairly decent comparison of what your choices are. Entry expenses vary and so do the details as well as the other factors that you have to consider for each. Some actually require a team effort and would be very hard for one person and impossible for one person on a small budget. This is why you have to think hard and work smart.
So Tom, what’s the best business to start?
I’m sure that there is someone out there who can maybe break this down better, but this is my shot at it. I’m not saying this is the definitive list for the best business to start, but I think that I have the gist of it here.
Business Types
Traditional – Offline:
- Mail Order – Phone/Catalog: exactly what it says. Inventory, Physical plant, workers, communications, insurance, advertising. Warehousing, shipping and logistics.
- Restaurant/Food Service: High end all the way to fast food and takeout. Physical location/own or rent, very labor-intensive, odd hours, long hours, employees, insurance, advertising, health inspections/laws.
- Retail: non-food retail sales: very labor-intensive, must be in a good location, advertising, equipment and physical location investment, rent, taxes, employees, long and odd hours.
- Network Marketing MLM: Old school network marketing – Amway, Avon, Tupperware, Primerica, etc – can be lucrative but lots of person to person selling and hustling around, handshaking, odd hours due to people breaking in from regular jobs so they have to work odd hours, weekends, holidays. Once established, if a large organization is built, the profits can be huge and the person shifts more to motivator than actual grunt salesperson.
- Service Oriented: Rental Cars, Limousines, Taxis, Car wash – very labor-intensive, must be in a good location, advertising, equipment and physical location investment, rent, taxes, employees, could have odd hours.
- Professional: Dr, Lawyer, Accountant, etc: Needs professional degree or lengthy education, high cost of insurance due to lawsuits and malpractice, long working hours and high barrier to entry, office location.
More Recent – Online:
- Internet Affiliate Marketing: Very low entry cost and learn all about affiliate marketing and the entire business model through easy to follow online training coupled with affiliate resources so that you can easily find affiliate offers to promote with blogs, social media, video, etc.
- Network Marketing MLM – Online: Very low entry cost, no employees, can have long working hours in the beginning while breaking in, but it’s a labor of love. The downside is a small investment and some time to build it out. The upside can be tremendous profit potential and multiplication – no longer trading time for money because of the multi level aspect. Leveraging the work and time of your team that you build. Over time you can shift from grunt sales and website creation etc to motivator for the larger team-building exercise once you have an organization under you.
- Online Retail: still need offices and a physical location, lots of employees to handle office work, websites, servers, infrastructure, traditional functions like accounting etc. Warehousing, shipping and logistics.
- Online Retail: sole proprietor – selling goods via Shopify, Ebay, Etsy, Craigslist, etc. Can make money but limited by how many orders you can fulfill (you have to create the products or get them via other means – not so bad if buying and drop shipping) and still have to ship goods out.
- Online Service: Again, whatever service is being offered, it could be a one person operation or a company needing employees and a location. The issue here is that for the one person shop, long hours, logistics, shipping, and volume for profit. Might not even break even. It depends on several factors. There have been success stories but doesn’t scale up well. In some rare cases, can scale up, like large websites like Facebook etc that made founders rich. This is the very rare exception.
Can you tell which is the one that I would choose and have chosen?
Do you know what I think is the best business to start?
I think that the best business to start is one that is already started. Let me say that another way. You let the others take the risk starting the company and dealing with all that infrastructure and then you sign on as an affiliate. (agent)
Choose one that has a multi-level or network marketing model so that you can build an organization under you and get residual income and sales from your team as time goes on. This is truly the lowest cost best way to get into business. No fancy degrees, no resumes, just let me in. Sure there is usually an investment, but it’s tiny compared to starting a regular company from scratch.
Let’s have a few words on what it costs to start a traditional business. Ask any business owner about their business expenses. They’ll probably start crying about taxes, employees, regulations, insurance, red tape, rent, vehicles and everything that goes with that (insurance, fuel, registration), advertising, etc. Research what it costs just to THINK ABOUT starting a traditional business, and then look at the failure rate for new businesses. Please do this before plopping down less than $100 on starting something. Please tell those people out there who think that starting a business should be easy or free about what you found out.
The opportunities today, online, are amazing, and surprising for how low cost they are compared to starting a traditional business venture. Where else in history could you start on such a small budget? About the only thing that compares is the old school cottage industry like selling baked goods from your home, but that doesn’t have the tremendous potential of internet-based businesses, especially internet-based affiliate marketing businesses.
In my opinion, the best business to start is an affiliate marketing MLM type organization and/or affiliate blog. All you need, usually, is some sort of website or blog. You learn those skills (they aren’t hard) and then also the techniques of network marketing and those toolsets. you’ll be on your way in no time.
Look around my blog and you’ll find plenty more information to see and watch.
The combination of blogging, creating content, and marrying that with internet affiliate marketing is so powerful that most people today can’t even grasp the true potential until they really delve in and go for it.
You find a worthy program, find a niche, get a domain, web hosting, and install a blog, then get creating content around keywords. It’s that simple. After that, it’s the familiar work of design, content creation, and syndication. The formula is simple, but it takes work to implement it. The beauty is that once you create the content, it’s there for the long haul. Your ideas are now the root of your best home business start to take off and then you’ll never have to look back.
It won’t create itself and you have to take action to get it done, but it’s not physically hard work and it can be fun and therapeutic It’s also a good exercise for the brain and provides hope for your future. Who can’t do with some more hope? You won’t get as angry at work when the boss acts like a jerk because you know that when you go home you’ll be working towards your bossless future. The best internet business to start is one like this, with little start-up capital, no employees, and you can work and learn at your own pace. Remember, the best small business to start is the one that pays you like it’s big business.
The Motivational Mindset Matters
Not to get all new agey on you, but they talk about how you have to imagine prosperity and abundance. They’re not just blowing smoke.
Ever watch that “The Secret” (movie) stuff when they talk about imagining getting checks in the mail? How can you get checks in the mail if you never set up the mechanism for that to happen?
Think about it. It’s easy to do. A minor adjustment…
You have to imagine receiving money and it must be believable for you, as stated by Joe Vitale in the movie. Well, how believable is asking for $20,000. in a month if you don’t have the infrastructure set up to receive that money? There has to be a vehicle unless you want to rely on pure chance or the lottery. This is the best business to start with little money.
It becomes believable when you are creating content around a system that pays commissions on everything from a $25 blogging system up to higher value internet marketing courses. How about residual commissions on valuable internet affiliate courses? Ever think about residual income internet marketing tools? People ARE buying this stuff and joining these systems, so are you going to sit there and think up excuses, or are you going to claim your piece of this industry?
